“I did Tharina‘s stretch class this morning and the only question I had afterwards was how soon I could do another. For once I’ve found a teacher who is hyper-vigilant about our posture and not merely intent on getting a workout for herself. Thanks, T!”
I started adult ballet classes ( the first time) around 1992 after a lifetime of longing to do so, and being labeled a ‘klutz’ by my family. I had always been the shy, ‘grey, invisible middle child’s growing up, and being extremely self-conscious. Nearly 8 years later, my teacher organise a show where we performed for invited family and friends only – people who came to see us succeed. For me, it was the most magical breakthrough to stand up and be seen, and my confidence made a quantum leap – I even decided I loved performing!!

I’ve never done any form of dance before and I’m pretty un-coordinated!!! But Kath makes me want to dance. She is a great teacher – Kath is warm, patient, enthusiastic and inspiring!
Jennifer D′AlmeidaEnthusiastic and inspiring!
If someone had told me 20years ago that I would be dancing in formal ballet classes I would have fallen about laughing. But here I am, a mother, wife and professional woman dancing for the pure love of it. Ballet for adults is the ultimate in health and wellness and like a small child experiencing something special for the first time I simply cannot get enough of it
Rosalie HornungFor the pure love of it!
I’m loving Adult Ballet classes, enjoying the challenge on my body and mind; the concentration i need to learn is great way to take mind off work at end of the day. Kathleen is a great teacher.

I love to dance because it makes me feel free and beautiful and inspired. Learning as an adult just proves that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to! And Kathy is an amazing, patient teacher who makes learning ballet so much fun! Really loving taking ballet here! I feel like I am making progress, getting stronger, and having fun!
Melanie RayeHaving fun!
I’ve joined an adult ballet class after a 25year break and loving it. This is a lovely friendly small class in a spacious dance studio in Onehunga. Kathy is approachable and knowledgeable and I feel like I’m making good progress. Class fees are reasonable with plenty of payment options. Scheduling is flexible with weeknight and weekend options. Extra workshops are regularly available in other dance styles or for improving flexibility and conditioning.

Ballet is the best time of my week when I can leave the stresses of life at the door and totally focus on my body! Doing adult ballet is amazing, not scary or intimidating at all especially with such a kind caring teacher

Woo hoo! GRADUATED from Auckland Academy of Adult Ballet‘s initiation course last night (after 6 weeks of classes…and 30 years out of dance). A very welcome touch of grace and femininity into my very masculine unrelenting crossfit/strength/conditioning program. Thank you Kathleen Curwen-Walker for your never ending patience, faith that miracles may happen one day, great teaching style, and sense of humour!! Thank you to the other ladies in my classes – great fun, great company. Next year Grade 3! (lol..my three degrees are unframed in a draw…but my ballet certificate is going on my wall! baa haa haaa..are my priorities upside down or what! 😉…tomorrow im back to practising “sautes” by squat jumping with a 10kg barbell…he he he!

It Stops Ageing
The health benefits of dance, especially ballet, are well- documented, but it’s only now that there is a plethora of classes that older ladies are waking up to the idea and slipping into Lycra and performing en pointe (on tiptoes).Dr Anne Hogan, director of education for the Royal Academy of Dance, says: ‘People aged 50 upwards are looking for a type of exercise that suits their body. High impact exercises such as running are not going to be beneficial to most in that age group. Ballet helps refine balance, flexibility and core strength.‘These are key to maintaining anyone’s health, but are especially important at that age. Ballet is also sociable, provides the opportunity to do something to music and is technically challenging.’

Healthy Body & Mind
Yes it is possible, given a strong body, to learn pointe work as an adult – under the watchful eye of a trained professional only! The exam system does give one a “goal” to work towards as an option for those interested, however our Auckland ballet classes are tailored for any adult wanting recreational dance.
Ballet is a discipline and will only produce results with consistency. At least one class per week is recommended, two classes per week will result in quicker establishing of technique, thus more enjoyment. Adult beginners will also benefit from the discipline recreational dance brings.
Creative & Fun People
Sometimes our adult and recreational dance classes can be very social! Once per semester we have a social night out – but keep the chatting to after class, because during your lesson, you need to hear each & every technical instruction to get the most out of the class!
